“FEMINAMORPHE” Candie Bolton, Helen Vine, Okokume, Tasha Zimich, Teresa Chiba and Uamou opens Saturday!
Toy Art Gallery is proud to present “FEMINAMORPHE” featuring Candie Bolton, Helen Vine, Okokume, Tasha Zimich, Teresa Chiba and Uamou. Feminamorphe’s six female artists bring a unique perspective to the toy art form, mixing beauty and cuteness with a dark thread of surreality. The show features original drawings, paintings, and prints along with custom toys and exclusive editions.
Candie Bolton: “Feminamorphe is an all female show featuring art that expresses femininity through nature. I chose this theme because I believe it resonates well within the other artists, yet also has personal significance to myself since I’ve always felt that humans should find common ground with nature instead of distinguishing ourselves from it. For my pieces, I imagined a world where the lives of women and animals have been completely merged and exist harmoniously as one creature.”
Uamou: “The approach to my creative work is rather direct and simple, it does not require a lot of thinking really. If anything, I just start painting or drawing with a flash of inspiration. When I was asked to create a series of Uamou for TAG’s “Feminamorphe Show” the first thing that came to my mind was the leopard pattern. Not necessarily restricted to leopards only, the leopard pattern can be found among many animals and plants and have always had my admiration. The leopard pattern is brash and elegant at the same time and I think that for that reason you will find that many women like to wear the leopard pattern as well.
Since the Uamou character has such a simple and universal shape it is possible for me to reinvent the character in an infinite amount of ways. Therefore I have found myself working more and more with colors
and experimenting with patterns. When painting Uamou for Feminamorphe I wanted to accentuate femininity with a swatch of soft and vibrant colors and thus the “New Wave Leopard” Pattern was born.”
Tasha Zimich: “This show is significant to me because my work identifies with the creative ebb and flow of transfiguration. A lot of my artworks follow a surreal vein of things becoming or revealing something else, changing, or appropriating visual or personified qualities. We do that as people too. Growing as individuals doesn’t happen in a vacuum. We’re a product of what we bring into our lives and feed our person with- whether by graceful aesthetic adornments, or the consumption and appropriation of what we aspire to have or be. My figures for Feminamorphe express how we incorporate these forms and traits internally, and they manifest at surface level.”
Helen Vine: “My piece for the show is titled ‘I Live In My Dreams’. The piece is a reflection of my meditations – dreams of me, thoughts swimming in guts, luxury. Like a dream I’d like to leave the meaning open to interpretation.”
Please join us for the exhibit opening on Saturday, January 10th from 7-10pm at Toy Art Gallery’s showroom located at 7571 Melrose Ave. Hollywood CA 90046.
FEMINAMORPHE runs through January 31st.
