Hailing from Birmingham, Alabama, USA, Sun Ra was a jazz composer, bandleader, pianist, synthesizer artist, poet, and visionary. An iconic figure in Afrofuturism, he excelled in a diverse array of musical styles including jazz, R&B, exotica, Afro-hybrid genres, electronic music, big band arrangements, solo piano performances, orchestral works, experimental sounds, and chamber music. Over his 45-year recording career, he released an extensive catalog of albums and was the first African American musician to establish an independent record label. Named “Saturn” after the planet he claimed as his place of origin, the label's uniquely crafted, handmade jackets are now prized by collectors as pieces of art. Sun Ra was a remarkable genius who steadfastly maintained control over his artistic journey and legacy.
