An iconic figure in Afrofuturism, he excelled in a diverse array of musical styles including jazz, R&B, exotica, Afro-hybrid genres, electronic music, big band arrangements, solo piano performances, orchestral works, experimental sounds, and chamber music. Over his 45-year recording career, he released an extensive catalog of albums and was the first African American musician to establish an independent record label.
