Ray Caesar's digital graphics, which draw inspiration from Jean-Antoine Watteau's figurative paintings, are representations of uncomfortable childhood memories and the subconscious processes of the mind, much like dreams. Caesar's works are fantastical, glitzy caricatures that evoke the paintings of John Currin and Lisa Yuskavage. They were created with Maya, a 3-D modeling program that Caesar used to create digital animations for the film and television industries in the late 1990s. I use painful memories and suppressed feelings to create objects that initially appear beautiful but have a slight unsettling quality or contain a component that makes you wonder why it might be there.
