White: A Decade - Michael Hussar
White: A Decade by Michael Hussar. 245 pages. This beautifully produced book provides insight into over 10 years of Michael Hussar's painting career through examination of a specific recurring visual element - white. Not only can viewers see the evolution of Hussar's body of work through a series of predominantly white paintings, they will also gain a sense of the impact that Hussar's white images have had on the contemporary alternative art scene. White is often underused or misused in art and design; this highly collectible book shows how compelling white can be in the hands of a modern master. Southern California is where Michael Hussar was born in 1964. He would frequently paint with his casual painter father, who had influenced him. Later, he studied in Pasadena, California's Art Center College of Design. Oil paintings by Michael Hussar are his most well-known works. He uses a combination of rococo, baroque, and other classical forms combined with contemporary subject matter, drawing inspiration from the work of the past masters. Hussar prefers to work on gessoed wood panels rather than canvas while making paintings as opposed to using a surface mixing technique. In order to focus on atmosphere before turning to detail, he prefers to work from dark to light values. His most famous works frequently include a white background with red accents.
